NYC's Meatpacking District: From Industrial To Trendy

Last updated 6 months ago

New York City is filled with nonstop excitement and opportunities for romance. This couldn’t be more true than right here in Manhattan. From our sophisticated shops to our cozy cafés, Manhattan is the ultimate spot for lovebirds in the City. Manhattan is also home to NYC’s famous Meatpacking District. Here’s a closer look at the history of this popular area:

During the early 1820s, New York City residents began moving to the area that would become the Meatpacking District. There were epidemics afflicted thousands of residents throughout New York, and this area gave people shelter and safety. After individuals and families began calling this area home, shops and markets started opening in the neighborhood to accommodate the new residents.

New York soon designated this area as “Gansevoort Market” in 1884, as a way to honor General Peter Gansevoort, a hero of the Revolutionary War. After the official name designation, the area quickly became home to more and more markets and shops, and fewer and fewer residences. The Gansevoort Market was first known for its wonderful selection of produce, but then everything changed with the introduction of usable commercial refrigeration.

Thanks to advancements in refrigeration, shops and markets in Gansevoort Market were now able to offer meat products. This progress was the final step in turning the area into a fully commercial part of town. Throughout the early 1900s, more and more slaughterhouses and packing plants began to pop up in this part of Manhattan. Eventually, there were approximately 250 different slaughterhouses and plants, which make Manhattan the third-largest producer of meat products in America.

Over the past few decades, the Meatpacking District has said goodbye to most of these meat-producing venues and has welcomed a variety of hip and exciting places for tourists and residents to enjoy. There are an assortment of shops, cafés, and restaurants that provide the perfect romantic atmosphere!

Located right in the heart of the Meatpacking District, the historic Liberty Inn will give you the opportunity to experience a little bit of romance, even if you’re far from home. Call us at (888) 646-0498 or visit our website to learn more.
